Craigerne Hotel, Newtonmore, near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, is a great place to stay if you are on a road trip or if you are looking for a mountain bike base if planning to ride the Cairngorm National Park trails.
It is a small hotel in the village of Newtonmore with good en suite rooms, couple of lounges and a little in-house bar, also, in the garden there is a very cool fire pit with chairs around it. All perfect for relaxing, chilling out and having few beers after a hard day on the saddle.
It is in the village so only minutes away from the local bars and a great little restaurant called the Letter Box, which does a fantastic value set menu for just £10 – I can recommend the pepper steak. The hotel itself does meals, by arrangement, and for larger groups.
At the hotel there is a useful outdoor hose for washing down the bikes after a day on the trail, plus a good drying room and a secure garage, which has electricity and lighting – useful for doing any essential bike maintenance work after dark. Touches like this go someway to highlight the thought the owners have put into accommodating cycling guests.
Newtonmore is just off the A9, main route from Lands End to John O Groats – ah, memories of a fabulous summer. A good 60 mile road run from the hotel is round the 5 bridges of Carrbridge, Dulnain Bridge, Nethy Bridge, Coylumbridge and Feshie Bridge.
For MTB fans, from the hotel doorstep you have direct access right onto various great mountain bike routes as well as Wolftrax MTB Centre around 8 miles away.
Craigerne Hotel is very welcoming and thoroughly recommended.
