For over 25 years, Louis Garneau has been an innovator in the world of cycling. What started in his father’s garage has grown into an internationally recognized industry leader that specializes in the design and development of technological and innovative gear.

Here we take a look at the new range of Garneau Helmets, in particular, the Quartz, Diamond and X-Lite helmets. For a more in-depth look at Cycling Helmets see our recent article.

Quartz Garneau Helmet

The Quartz helmet is priced at £99.99 and is designed as an entry-level pro-helmet. This is the type of helmet to go for when things start to get serious. Weighing just 260g the Quartz is certainly lightweight. It’s main design strength lies with it’s ventilation and airflow, due to the massive 33 vents.

So, how good is the Quartz? Just ask Thomas Voeckler and the rest of the Europcar ProTour team or Triple World Ironman champion, Chrissie Wellington. Their endorsement of the Quartz is testament to just how good it is. Thomas Voeckler spent a long time in this helmet in this year’s Tour de France, and needed the large ventilation provided by the Quartz.

MSB technology is used in the Quartz, and also in the X-Lite & Diamond helmets. Spiderlock LS fit system is found on the Quartz and X-Lite models. The webbing system can be easily adjusted with one hand whilst the helmet is on the head thanks to the rack and pinion, indexed mechanism. Angle can also be adjusted to easily accommodate rear head contours without any painful pressure points.

Diamond Garneau Helmet

The Diamond Garneau helmet sells for £129.99 which makes it a serious piece of equipment. It is Garneau’s top-of-the-range road race helmet and represents many years of development.

The Diamond helmet is slightly heavier than the Quartz but at just 285g it can hardly be described as heavy. With an incredible 40 vents, the Diamond is one hell of a ventilated helmet.

A carbon composite sub-frame, found on both the Quartz and the Diamond, helps with structural support. Exposed only at certain points on the helmet, this composite reinforcement runs internally through the full width and length of the helmet and also plays an important part in reducing overall weight.

Turn the Diamond over and you will find two thin lightweight strips running the length of the inside of the helmet to aid reinforcement. Garneau call this Exo Insert Technology, and, as the name suggests, much like an exo-skeleton, they help spread the shock of impact and maintain the helmet’s structure in the event of impact.

The Diamond uses Garneau’s Spiderlock Elite fit system. Unlike the Spiderlock SL it sits separately from the helmets webbing and is also 100% detachable (for easier cleaning). Adjustable via the rack-and-pinion indexed mechanism, the cradle is also backed with ergonomic foam padding for added comfort.

Diamond Specifications

  • Weight: 10.1oz / 285g

  • Evacuation channels: Internal channels provide better airflow and evacuate moisture and heat.
  • Super MSB Technology: Ring-shaped protection at the base of the helmet reinforces the perimeter for enhanced protection.
  • Exo-Insert Technology: Lightweight inner plastic reinforcement spreads the shock of impact and helps maintain the helmet’s structure.
  • Composite Reinforcement: Lightweight composite skeleton provides structural support and integrity on impact.

X-Lite Garneau Helmet

One of the lightest helmets currently on the market, the X-Lite weighs just 195g and sells for £124.99. It is designed to be so light and comfortable that you’ll forget you’re wearing it!

The X-Lite is very comfortable to wear and with 37 vents, it’s well ventilated too.

Garneau achieved this lightweight performance for the X-Lite with their patent-pending U-Bar Technology. The helmet shell is made with U-shaped ribs in which the plastic is folded 6 times.

These ribs act like a complex exo-skeleton that reinforces the helmet structure. Very strong, yet very light, very pro but without the associated pricetag.

X-Lite Specifications

  • Weight: 6.9oz / 195g
  • Certifications: CPSC-ASTM-CE-AS2063
  • Vents: 37
  • In-Mold Construction: Industrial process binding the microplastic and polystyrene together to add superior mechanical properties to these materials.
  • Superlight: Where grams convert into seconds, there is no place for weight. To avoid comfort, multifunction adjustment or ventilation failure, an optimal design is crucial. Each gram is the key to protection and comfort.
  • U-Bar Technology: Highly inspired by the Exo-Nerv technology, the plastic shell is made with U-shaped ribs: the plastic is folded 6 times. These ribs act like a complex exoskeleton that reinforces the helmet structure.
  • Super MSB Technology: Ring-shaped protection at the base of the helmet reinforces the perimeter for enhanced protection.
  • Spiderlock SL: So light, this rack-and-pinion system can be adjusted using only one hand to stabilize the helmet around the head. It is provided with ergonomic foam padding.
