Just been online to book for the Manchester 160k and noticed that as I am over 60, I am required to check with my doctor to see if ok to ride. Today I have just completed a 95k training ride in the Welsh mountains and last weekend completed a sportive with Brad Wiggins in the Yorkshire Dales. What bright spark has decided that we all become infirm at 60, this is so demoralising I would like to know on what basis this has been formulated and what evidence if any to show that + 60 year olds are less fit than others. We are all responsible for preperation for these events and i suggest that a more general request for health issues to be addressed would be far more appropriate and encouraging to us old sods.

@Charlie – you tell ‘em Charlie!

  3. Hi Charlie,

There was really no offence meant to those riders into their 7th decade (and we do have quite a number into their eighth!). Our recommendation that those prospective riders aged 60 or over – or with pre-existing medical conditions – consult their GP before taking part just reflects the duty of care we owe to all our riders, just as does our recommendation that all participants should wear helmets. (I’m sure you wouldn’t disagree with that.) While not wishing to cast aspersions on the health and capability of any of our riders, whatever their age, we do occasionally find that a day in the saddle is all a bit too much for some people. Last year, indeed, we had a chap in his late 60s ‘fit as a fiddle’ and a regular distance rider like yourself who, sadly, collapsed with a heart attack on crossing the finish line of a 42 mile ride. Luckily, with CPR and hospital treatment, he made a full recovery and even took part in the same ride this year – this time without incident, thankfully. This goes to show that These Things Can Happen To Anybody. And, as the organisers of bike rides suitable for everyone, if we didn’t point that out we’d be being a little irresponsible, don’t you think?

    All the best,

My first bike event and a succesful one at that. I don’t think there was any cause for complaint at all. I met a couple of nice people along the way. Feel sorry for the chap who broke his leg around the 25 30 mile mark(any more news on him). The banter along the way was excellent.
