Trek Crockett Cyclocross Bikes Review

The Trek Crockett range consists of race-honed bikes that are intended to face off against some particularly gnarly terrain while still allowing the rider to remain comfortable and in control at all times. These bikes may be built for competitive performance at speed, but they are still robustly constructed to prevent physical punishment from taking its toll too soon.

Whilst there are only three models in the 2014 series, there is quite a lot of variety; SRAM or Shimano groupsets, cantilever, mechanical and hydraulic disc brake options.

Trek Crockett 5 Disc

The Crockett 5 Disc comes with the 200 Series Alpha Aluminium frame and a number of components which complement its capabilities. This includes the IsoSpeed fork, which is actually made from carbon and puts comfort first, ensuring enough compliance to soak up the lumps and bumps on tougher surfaces.

Bontrager Disc alloy hubs and rims are combined with Bontrager CX3 tyres, while the drivetrain uses Shimano 105 components and a Tiagra cassette. The brakes are Avid BB5 and use a mechanical disc setup with 160mm rotors at the front and rear for additional stability and control. Note: whilst the 5-Disc gets mechanical discs, the 7-Disc offers hydraulic discs but then there is a £600 difference in overall price, ouch!

Trek Crockett 7 & 7 Disc

The alloy frame comes with clever cable routing that minimises mess and drag, as well as a chain keeper to prevent any unexpected slips and issues while out on a ride. SRAM Rival components are used for the drivetrain, while the brakeset for the basic Crockett 7 harnesses Avid Short 6 cantilever equipment.

If you choose the slightly more expensive Crockett 7 Disc, most of the kit remains the same, but this time Avid SB 700 hydraulic disc brakes are introduced at the front and rear. Hydraulic operation allows for improved responsiveness and sensitivity, which is the kind of thing that professional riders require to stay on top of their game.

Mudguard mounts on all models let you stop surface spray from interfering with your experience and compromising your comfort while you are in the saddle of your Trek Crockett.
