Trek CrossRip Cyclocross Review

Although cyclocross bikes can be fairly focused affairs, the Trek CrossRip range is designed to meet a variety of needs and perform well whether you are taking it on the tarmac for your daily commute or racing across dusty trails for some countryside fun at the weekend. With light alloy frames and a range of competitive components, these are tough and nimble bikes that are priced to be attainable.

Trek CrossRip Comp

The Alpha Gold aluminium frame gets the CrossRip geometry and manipulated tubing which reduces weight and helps the bike to wrangle its large, grippy Bontrager tyres with ease. Up front is a Bontrager Satellite Plus fork which is made from carbon, a premium material not often seen at this price point, which is compliant enough to take the sting out of big hits while still being light and strong.

Shimano Claris shifters and derailleurs are matched with an FSA Verso crank and SRAM cassette in the drivetrain, while you get Avid BB5 mechanical disc brakes at the front and rear with Tektro levers to keep you in control in slippy situations.

Trek CrossRip Elite

The alloy frame of the Comp is carried over to the Elite, but this time the wheelset includes Bontrager TLR rims and a drivetrain that features Shimano Sora components.

The Avid brakeset is swapped out for a Hayes CX5 mechanical disc setup that is a little more responsive, although you still get a 160mm rotor at the front and a smaller 140mm rotor at the rear.

There are mudguard mounts and a rack mount onboard both of these Trek CrossRip bikes, while the significant amount of tyre clearance means that debris can pass through without compromising the handling of the bike or the quality of the ride in spite of the larger tyres which are featured here.
