The Trek Superfly 100 AL range of full suspension mountain bikes are designed for excellent cross country performance comparable to their carbon superiors but with the affordability that comes from utilising alloy frames as an alternative.

The 29 inch wheels deliver speed and performance over rough terrain while the shocks help smooth out technical trails without any drama.

Trek Superfly 100 AL Elite

The Trek Superfly 100 AL Elite features an Alpha Platinum Aluminium main frame, along with alloy stays and a magnesium swing link. These components combine to keep the bike light and stiff, while the specially tailored G2 geometry is able to offer precise handling that you might not expect from this kind of bike. If you like to feel like you are truly in touch with the trail without being at the mercy of it then this setup will prove suitable.

The front fork features a Fox Evolution Series 32 Float 29 RL shock with 100mm of travel. The suspension setup is completed by the Fox Performance Series Float RP-2 shock at the rear, giving the whole bike progressive compression which helps to keep up the speed even if the going gets tough.

The drive train mixes components from various Shimano groupsets, including the SLX and Deore XT families. The 10 speed cassette and 3 ring crankset is efficient and durable, giving you access to more gears and closer ratios for slick shifting every time. Meanwhile the press-fit bottom bracket improves pedalling efficiency and means that the whole frame is stiffer and more robust as a result.

Bontrager Mustang Disc 29 rims are wrapped in Bontrager 29-1 Expert tyres, while the Shimano M666 SLX hydraulic disc brakeset is a good fit for this type of bike, allowing you to stop with confidence and manipulate the bike minutely.

Kit from the Bontrager Race Lite and Rhythm Elite ranges make up the seapost, handlebar and stem. The chromoly-mounted Evoke 2 saddle is well suited to cross country courses and the lock-on Race Lite grips will keep your hands firmly planted in place.

Trek Superfly 100 AL Pro

The Trek Superfly 100 AL Pro model ups the stakes by adding in a Flow Mold Carbon swing link to the already impressive Alpha Platinum Aluminium frame setup.

Your extra investment also nets you an improved suspension setup. At the front is the Fox Evolution Series 32 Float 29 RL shock with 15QR, while the rear features the Fox Performance Series Float RP-23 Adaptive Logic shock with three position ProPedal technology. These have been specifically customised by Trek in the US to give the bike comprehensively improved suspension performance that is ready for anything.

The drive has also been upgraded to feature the entire Shimano Deore XT groupset, making it lighter and more durable. The Shimano Deore XT M785 hydraulic disc brakes also fit this description, along with the Bontrager Race Lite FCC wheelset.

The Bontrager Evoke 3 saddle with titanium rails sits atop the Rhythm Elite seat post, putting you in an adaptive position from which to power the bike forwards.

There are a number of reasons to choose a cross country mountain bike with 29 inch wheels, the most obvious of which is the improved efficiency and speed which can be achieved on the flat. However, unlike hardtail models the Trek Superfly 100 AL range will let you take on the roughest terrain, as well as ascents and descents, with improved stability, comfort and performance. You just need to decide which of these bikes will be the best fit for your budget and indeed your own skill level.
