Each year, bike shops offer some outstanding deals on Black Friday for pretty much every type of bike. We’ve pulled together a list of the best deals on adult bikes and kids bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes, plus every other type of bike you can think of. If you’re looking for a bike as a Christmas Gift for someone special, or even as a treat for yourself, Black Friday really is one of the best times to get a great deal.

The best deals on bike this year are without doubt from Wiggle who have just announced they have entered Administration following recent funding issues. This appears to have been the catalyst for their massive price discounts, deals & promotions around this year’s Black Friday. Black Friday 2024

Black Friday 2024 is on Friday 29th November 2024 but many retailers start their deals & offers several days, or even weeks, ahead of the official Black Friday promotion. Amazon, for example, start their Black Friday promotion several weeks before the official day, which is far from the original intention of the Friday promotion. Regardless of their reasons, many bike retailers will no doubt follow suit and start their cycling deals before the actual Black Friday date so we’ll keep track of these and list all the bike deals we can find, by bike shop, bike type and cycling brand.

Despite us still being weeks away from this year’s event, rumours are already circulating within the cycling industry that Black Friday 2024 will be the biggest ever. It’s no secret that retailers have had one of the worse years on record and whilst bike shops have seen some growth this year as more people discover cycling, product overstocks are likely to seen some spectacular discounts.

Last year we saw online sales rise by a massive +20% on the previous year but that is likely to be dwarfed by Black Friday 2024 and whilst some cycling retailers limit their promotions to the weekend of the main event, others had offers over several weeks. We’re hearing that this trend is likely to be adopted by more shops this year. Whilst lockdown restrictions were a key factor in 2021 with high street shopping restrictions, online shopping has seen huge growth and it’s worth spending a bit of time this year searching for what we expect to be a superb year of discounts.

Have you ever thought about Black Friday from a historical perspective, how it led to becoming one of the biggest days in the retail calendar, or how it got its name?

Black Friday is a US promotion that falls on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day, which is a national holiday. Americans started taking an additional days holiday on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day to create a long-weekend, and over time found themselves being marketed to with tempting offers to lure them into the stores, and eventually to the online shops.

However, the term ‘Black Friday‘ origins have nothing to do with shopping, instead it comes from Wall Street, the US financial centre. Financiers, Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, bought a large amount of gold, speculating that the price would rise, resulting in them earning a substantial profit. Unfortunately for Fisk & Gould, and no doubt many others, the US gold market crashed on Friday 24 September 1869, leaving them bankrupt. This event became known as ‘Black Friday’. Whilst the name was established, it wasn’t associated with today’s deals and promotions until many years later.

The link to retail stems from the accounting practice of profits being recorded in black ink and losses in red ink. Typically, retail companies are thought to be loss-making throughout the year, and don’t start to make a profit, or go into the black, until later in the year.

Black Friday has become a huge sales event across the World, with US sales alone reaching $7bn last year.

Unsurprisingly, UK retailers followed their American cousins with promotions, with UK based retail companies, introducing Black Friday deals via their US parent companies. For example, supermarket Asda, owned by the American giant Walmart, introduced us to Black Friday madness in 2013, quickly followed by Apple, Best Buy and others.

Where Can I Find the Best Black Friday Bike Deals?

Last year, bike shops large and small followed the major retailers to promote Black Friday deals in shops as well as online. The deals included big discounts, promo and voucher codes and a broad range of other offers. It’s likely that they are going to follow this up this year and offer some excellent deals to clear previously slow selling items but also to generate some sales after a pretty awful sales year.

When Will Black Friday Deals Starts?

Whilst Black Friday this year falls on the last Friday in November, deals and discounts generally start a few days, or even weeks, before the official Black Friday event itself. Amazon usually fires the starting pistol some time in late October, so don’t leave it too late before you start looking for the best bike deals. Bike retailers take different approaches to Black Friday, with some following Amazon and others sticking religiously to the weekend of Black Friday. Many bike dealers have pages up already although they’re devoid of any offers at this stage. However, many have countdown clocks showing the time and date of when their promotions start, which is quite handy. Social media is also another source of information but this tends to be quite quiet until the promotion has actually started.

Black Friday Shopping Tips

When Black Friday kicks off, you can expect to see some outstanding deals and offers so make sure you’re ready.

It’s easy to get carried away with seeing half-price bike deals and deciding to buy straight away but be sure it’s still what you want. If you’re looking for a Shimano Ultegra Di2 road bike, don’t be persuaded by Claris groupset just because it’s a bargain. Having said that, be flexible between cassette, chainring, groupset etc but not on frame size or even type of bike. Likewise with the amount of money you spend, set a budget and stick to it, remember interest free finance is still likely to be more money than your original budget.

Be prepared, bookmark this page and keep looking for the latest deals. You may also like to join the mailing lists of your favourite bike retailer, remember you can always unsubscribe after Christmas.

One thing to watch out for is an offer that is half price against a fake starting price, for example, against RRP. Most bikes are not sold at RRP price and so the discount isn’t really genuine. The other thing is to be careful not to be seduced into the discount and to still check the actual price against other bike shops as they may still be cheaper.

My best tip for Black Friday deals on bikes is to look for bikes which are two or three years old. These bikes are just as good as any from this year and are likely to even have the same groupset.

If you’re using Black Friday as a way to buy cheap gifts for friends and family, be mindful of refund policies. The legal position online is for consumers to have 30 days, which comes from the Distance Selling Regulation but often major retailers give customers a longer refund period, sometimes as late as the end of January as they recognise that some people are buying bikes, cycling accessories etc as a Christmas gift.
