Eurobike XC550 Features
The first thing you notice about the XC550 is that it’s a good looking bike, the sleek black colour with flashes of red and white to catch the eye of other cyclists. The style continues with the rims (cycling speak for wheels), which are available as lightweight multi-spoke rims or more modern looking 3-spoke design. Whichever wheels you choose, both compliment the overall look of the XC550 and will ensure you receive admiring glances on every ride.
The bike weighs around 14kg with the multi-spoke rims and is just slightly heavier at 16kg with the 3-spoke mag wheels. Whilst this doesn’t make the XC550 the lightest bike ever made, it’s light enough to help you whizz uphill and sturdy enough not to get blown away. The frame itself is made from steel, rather than aluminium, so just watch that the paint doesn’t chip to reveal base metal as this might show signs of rust as the bike ages. Other aspects of the frame are also made from steel, including front forks, handlebars, stem, tubes, stays and posts.
Eurobike supply the XC550 with 700×28 tyres, meaning they are standard road bike sized wheels with 28mm wide tyres. Eurobike have confirmed that the XC550 bike can accommodate 32mm width tyres should you wish to change from the ones supplied. Moving from 28mm to 32mm may be suitable if you are commuting to work, across road surfaces of less than perfect quality or expect to cycle in wet conditions with an array of debris on the road. Both tyre widths are readily available from most bike shops, as are the relevant inner tubes.
One of the great things on this bike is that it comes with disc brakes fitted as standard to both the front and rear wheels. This helps to slow the bike and significantly improves stopping distances, especially in really wet weather. Disc brakes are slightly harder to adjust than rim brakes if you aren’t familiar with them but your local bike shop can do this for you and shouldn’t charge you more than a few quid.
The XC550 comes in one of two frame sizes, 49cm and 54cm. It’s always difficult to recommend the correct bike frame size for people but generally speaking, the 49cm frame is considered a small frame and would suit adults and children who are around 5′ 0″ to 5′ 6″ (150cm to 165cm), whereas the 54cm frame is a medium size suitable for people around 5′ 6″ to 6′ 0″ (165cm to 180cm).
Eurobike have partnered with Shimano to ensure quality components are fitted to the XC550. Starting with the Shimano A050 shifters, which control movement through the 21 gears, with help from the Shimano TZ30 front derailleur and the Shimano Tourney TZ rear derailleur. The front chainring is a triple, meaning it has 3 large rings at the front of the bike, attached to the crank arm and pedals. The triple chainring is fitted with 24T, 34T and 42T to help you navigate fast rolling road surfaces as well as slightly more challenging hills and inclines. Triple chainrings are less common today with most road bikes just having a double chainring, however, the triple on this XC550 enables greater flexibility for less experienced cyclists. The 24|34|42T ratio compares to 30|39|50T on the triple Shimano Claris crankset which means you’ll find it easier going uphill due to the smaller number of teeth on each of the chainrings but may run out of gears on the big downhill runs, maybe.
The rear cassette has a gear ratio of 14T, 16T, 18T, 21T, 24T, 26T, 28T which compares to a standard cassette of 11-28T. The 28T is the one you’ll find yourself using on steep hills and the smaller sprockets are used for flat roads or downhills, depending on your strength and fitness levels. The combination of the 7 sprockets on the rear cassette and the 3 chainrings on the crankset is what results in the XC550 having 21 gears (7×3), which is plenty for any cyclist.
