Trek Superfly Range Review

The Superfly family of hardtail mountain bikes consists of a host of well equipped 29ers, with various price points addressed to enhance the appeal. Prices range from &pound5,999 to just £1,100 so you can imagine the range of components.

So which one to choose, pick a budget and go for that one? No, I don’t think so here. Clearly if you have the money then the top of the range bikes are awesome but for the rest of us, my pick of the bunch is the Superfly 9. Despite it being an aluminium frame, it’s an excellent one and the 9 comes with Shimano Deore XT components throughout. At £2,000 this is the standard against which all the others should compare themselves.

Trek Superfly 5

This bike gets the ball rolling with an aluminium frame with butted and hydroformed tubing, RockShox Recon Silver forks at the front with 100mm of travel and Shimano Deore components in the drivetrain.

Trek Superfly 6

The Superfly 6 has various upgrades over its cheaper sibling, including a RockShox Reba RL fork with remote lockout for complete frame stiffness. You also get Mustang TLR rims from Bontrager and a crank from SRAM, along with X7 and X9 components from this manufacturer in the drivetrain.

Trek Superfly 7

Trek chooses to mark out its upgrades with improved suspension and drivetrain components in this range. The Superfly 7 uses the RockShox Reba RL fork which comes with 15mm Maxle Lite, custom G2 Geometry w/51mm offset and 100mm travel. You get an FSA F2000 crank, SRAM X7 front derailleur, Shimano Deore XT at the rear and SLX shifters.

Shimano also provide the brakes which are the M615 hydraulic disc brakes. These slow the Bontrager XR1 Expert tyres which sit on Bontrager rims.

Trek Superfly 8

RockShox is given the boot for the Superfly 8 and in its place you will find a Fox Evolution 32 series fork. The drivetrain however, retains the Shimano groupset with SLX at the front and Deore XT at the rear.

Brakes maintain the Shimano theme with a full SLX hydraulic disc package. The Bontrager Race X Lite stem is introduced, cutting down the bike’s weight and improving efficiency and compliance. Trek’s love of Bontrager components continue with rims and tyres.

Trek Superfly 9

On the Superfly 9, Trek moves away from Bontrager and utilises the excellent DT Swiss X1800 wheels, which are also seen on the more expensive Superfly 9.8 bike.

Shimano Deore XT is used throughout the drivetrain and onto the brakeset as well. The fork uses RockShox SID RL suspension with Trek’s own custom G2 geometry.

Trek Superfly 9.6

This is the first Superfly model to sport an OCLV Mountain Carbon frame, complete with carbon armour mounted tactically to reduce damage. A combination of Shimano, SRAM and FSA components make up the drivetrain and the Reba RL front suspension from RockShox is back onboard to help keep this model affordable.

But that’s the issue for me on this model, they’ve downgraded the components to make the bike affordable. You’d be better going for the Superfly 8 and whilst this isn’t a carbon frame, it’s a good bike with better components.

Trek Superfly 9.7

More carbon framed fun is had with this model, which also packs a Fox Evolution fork, Bontrager Mustang TLR rims and a full SRAM drivetrain. The hydraulic disc brakes from the Shimano SLX range are suitably responsive and cables are routed carefully to minimise the risk of problems. The Superfly 9.7 is the first bike to break the £2,000 level.

Trek Superfly 9.8

The same OCLV Mountain Carbon Frame is matched with DT Swiss X1800 wheels, Shimano Deore XT gears and brakes along with a Race X Lite Carbon handlebar from Bontrager. At the front you get a RockShox SID RL fork with remote lockout capabilities.

Trek Superfly 9.8 SL

The Superfly 9.8 SL has particularly impressive suspension, with the Fox Evolution Series 32 Float fork allowing you to manage climbs, trail tussles and descents with as much control as possible. The drivetrain and brakeset is made up of Shimano Deore XT components, which add consistency to the mix.

No change in the rims or tyres but there is a hefty increase in price.

Trek Superfly 9.9 SL XX1

The SID World Cup XX front suspension from RockShox is a competent bit of kit and works well with the Bontrager Race X Lite wheels, SRAM XX1 drivetrain and Avid XX World Cup hydraulic brakes. Even the saddle has been replaced, this time with a Bontrager Evoke RXL unit that sits on carbon rails.

Trek Superfly 9.9 SL XTR

The Fox Factory fork comes with its own Kashima coating on the Superfly 9.9 SL XTR, delivering durability and responsiveness even after extended use. The Shimano XTR drivetrain and brakeset give this model its name.

Trek Superfly 9.9 SL Custom models

Trek also offers two customisable modes at the top of the Superfly range, available in a number of colours as chosen by the customer. Either a Shimano or SRAM drivetrain can be chosen to let you set up the bike to meet your requirements.
