There is a long history of cycling clubs on the Wirral, with the following being those known to us at the time of publication. Many of the club members have supported the local Wirral Sportives and the primary Wirral charity bike ride, the Wirral Bikeathon, either as participants or volunteers. Birkenhead North End Cycling Club
One of the oldest cycling clubs on the Wirral, established in 1901, Birkenhead North End Cycling Club (BNECC) is a club with members participating in all forms of competitive and social cycling.
Birkenhead Victoria Cycling Club
A family-friendly club, Birkenhead Victoria Cycling Club caters to all ages and abilities with weekly club runs, training rides, time trials, and social events. The club also has a strong racing pedigree, with members participating in local and national races.
Mersey Tri Club
This club is focused on triathlon training, which includes cycling, swimming, and running. They offer regular training sessions and coaching, as well as social events and participation in triathlons and other events.
New Brighton Cycling Club
New Brighton Cycling Club is based on the north coast of the Wirral peninsular. It’s a local club, friendly and welcoming to new members, with a social meeting at Wallasey Yacht Club on the first Tuesday of the month.
North Wirral Velo Cycling Club
Founded in the early 1950’s, this North Wirral club has had many incarnations over the years but is now primarily a road racing club. Despite it’s early formation, the club folded in the mid-60’s but then started again in 1979. One of it’s best known cyclists was Chris Boardman, who went on to break the World Hour Record in Velo colours before turning professional. The club again lapsed in 1999, but was reformed in July 2017 with new jerseys, new members and renewed vigour for cycling.
Peninsula Triathlon Club
A multi-sport club that includes cycling, Peninsula Triathlon Club caters to athletes of all levels and abilities, from beginners to seasoned professionals. The club holds regular training sessions and social events.
Port Sunlight Wheelers Cycling Club
Port Sunlight Wheelers were established in 1948 by soap workers from the world-famous Lever Brothers factory in Port Sunlight. The club was formed to provide relief from the hardships of post-war Britain, and quickly forged a reputation for cycling excellence and are one of the have since gone on to become one of the most well-regarded clubs in the country.
Established in 1945, Port Sunlight Wheelers Cycling Club is a friendly club catering to all levels of cyclists, from leisure to racing. The club holds regular rides.
Wirral Bicycle Belles
This cycling group is exclusively for women and focuses on promoting cycling as a healthy and social activity. They offer a range of rides, from gentle rides for beginners to more challenging routes, and participate in charity rides and events.
