Scott Contessa 20 Women's Mountain Bike

With this bike sitting at the top of a ladder that features a largely affordable array of cycles it is in something of an odd position. It is not priced or specified to be an overly focused racing machine but neither is it an unambiguous attempt to appeal to first timers. Whilst this might make it a little difficult to judge, a quick look at its vital statistics will tell you that the Scott Contessa 20 is affordable without being underwhelming and high performance without being hard to handle.

Scott has put its name on this bike but you might be forgiven for thinking that Shimano has a little more to do with its construction and success because its name appears so frequently in the list of components. The gears, hydraulic disc brakes and much more can be attributed to Shimano, which is definitely a positive point as it allows the various components to work in unison as they were intended. Scott provides the bike’s backbone in the form of an alloy frame with geometry designed to suit women cyclists and Suntour’s front fork features a shock that provides 100mm of travel for impact absorbing.

With a grey frame, white rims and a white saddle the Scott Contessa 20 is one of the prettier mountain bikes in the Contessa range, its dark shades indicating a degree of focus not present in the underlings. If I was being particularly critical about the look, I might call it drab, but it is easy to see how others might interpret it as a little classier than the alternatives.
