Specialized Epic Review

The selection of full-suspension mountain bikes included in the Specialized Epic range is suitably diverse, although all models benefit from carbon frames, plenty of compliance and durable components that can withstand the rough and tumble of off-road racing. These are competitive-grade bikes that have been ridden to victory by professionals, so the pedigree is undeniable.

The Epic Comp Carbon has been updated with a new FACT IS 9m carbon frame for 2014, which utilises 29er-specific geometry, a carbon bottom bracket, internal cable routing for gearing and brakes and a total of 100mm of travel. The suspension combines a RockShox Reba RL 29 fork with a rear shock forged from a partnership between FOX and Specialized.

The remote Mini-Brain inertial valve shock is lighter than ever and uses intelligent engineering to ensure that you can put down power while pedalling over flat surfaces, while still getting the benefits of the absorption it provides when things get rough. SRAM and Shimano drivetrain components are joined by Formula C1 brakes, S-Works Fast Trak Tyres and a Body Geometry Phenom Comp saddle on hollow Cr-Mo rails for a well-rounded riding experience.

Specialized Epic Expert Carbon

The Epic Expert Carbon shares a frame and rear shock with its stable mate, but includes a customised RockShox SID 29 Brain fork to give even more subtlety and performance to the suspension setup.

Magura MTS hydraulic disc brakes with high-friction pads are included on this model, along with Shimano SLX shifters, Roval Control Carbon rims and hubs and the butted alloy seatpost from Specialized which is another fully revised solution for 2014.

Specialized Epic Expert Carbon World Cup

For this bike you get the brand new FACT IS 10m carbon frame, which is equipped with M5 seat stays and geometry which is designed to lead the market. The SRAM XO1 drivetrain is light and reliable, with the S-Works Fast Trak tyre up front being joined by the Specialized Renegade Control at the rear.

Specialized Epic Marathon Carbon

The carbon frame of the Epic Marathon Carbon comes partnered with Roval Control Carbon 29 rims with hookless bead technology, DT Swiss Super Comp spokes and top tier Specialized tyres to keep the weight of the bike as low as possible.

The RAM X0 shifters and drivetrain components join forces with a customised SRAM carbon S-2200 crankset for further enhancement to the lightness of the setup. And in this instance the Body Geometry Phenom Expert sits on hollow titanium rails for strength and sturdiness.

Specialized S-Works Epic Carbon

Specialized pulls out all the stops for its S-Works bikes and this version of the Epic Carbon is no exception. Things are kicked off with a new FACT IS 11m full carbon frame which is matched with a carbon seatpost, Shimano XTR drivetrain and brakeset as well as carbon handlebars and rims.

S-Works Fast Trak tyres sit at the front and rear and you get the Fox/Specialized rear shock, but with Kashima coating to ensure smooth, long-lasting operation.
